About

Twenty-first Century Teens and Young Adults

This generation of teens and young adults are sophisticated, technologically advanced, and faced with 21st century challenges. Many teens and young adults thrive in our rapidly changing world, but some struggle with:

anxious thinking or worry
depressed mood or prolonged sadness
problems associated with ADHD
being bullied or not feeling connected to school
pressure to succeed in school
unrealistic media influence
families that are in transition due to divorce or separation
creating a meaningful academic or professional future

As a parent it is hard to watch a problem prevent your child from reaching his or her true potential. The first step in seeking professional help is often the most difficult, but can open doors for new solutions to emerge.

Solution-Focused Therapy

My goal as a solution-foucsed therapist is to assist teens and young adults to develop a plan of action to resolve the current problem. This means that I structure my therapy sessions to be oriented toward solving problems in the present. Therapy can provide a new perspective that helps teens and young adults learn new ways of thinking, behaving, or interacting with others. As clients meet small goals, they become more hopeful that whatever problem they are facing can be resolved - this is an opportunity for building resiliency and strength.

I welcome the opportunity to help teens and young adults -
collaborate on a plan of action
gain insight about themselves and the world around them
cultivate healthy means of communication
understand the consequences of his or her choices

Education
My professional experience includes a career as a school counselor of 15 years. I am currently employed as a middle school counselor in a large competitive school district in Montgomery County, PA where I manage caseloads of over 300 students. I am afforded the opportunity to work with a diverse student and parent population - all at different places in their lives. Working in a school setting gives me the perspective to understand that what happens in school with your child's peers and academic performance impacts their self-worth. Counseling students in a school setting also provides me with an approach that is grounded in a practicality of what really works for students and their families.

I am credentialed by the state of PA as a Licensed Professional Counselor and by the National Board for Certified Counselors as a Nationally Certified Counselor. In my current school counseling position, I co-created a school counseling program that earned, RAMP, a national distinction from The American School Counselor Association. This recognition for excellence in school counseling is shared by only one other middle school in PA.

My other school-related experiences include counseling elementary-aged and high school students and coaching middle school and varsity athletics. I have provided performance enhancement consulting in the area of imagery, goal setting, self-talk and team building to high school and collegiate athletes while working for Optimal Performance Enhancement.

In addition to my M.S. in School Counseling from the University of Tennessee, I earned my Ph.D. in Exercise and Sport Psychology from Temple University. My dissertation at Temple focused on physical activity promotion among youth and the academic, social, and emotional benefits of physical activity. I was the lead investigator and author of a study published in Obesity about the relationship between unhealthy weight status and decreased middle school performance. The study was reported on by several news agencies including The Los Angeles Times and is referenced on the Centers for Disease Control's website. As an undergraduate I attended Muhlenberg College where I earned a B.A. in Psychology.

I have presented about educational and physical activity topics at both national and local conferences including the Delaware Valley Minority Student Achievement Consortium at the Penn Center for Educational Leadership. I was part of a symposium at the American Psychological Association's National Convention in San Diego where I presented the results of my dissertation about increasing physical activity through HYPPE, a pedometer-based physical activity promotion among middle school students.
